Share Shed - A library of Things

The Share Shed is a ‘library of things’ based in Totnes (Devon, UK), where people can borrow all sorts of useful things, ranging from ladders, drills, carpet cleaners, camping and gardening equipment, sewing machines, and much more!

The project enables local people to borrow items at nominal cost so that they don’t have to buy them for themselves. The aim is to build a more resourceful community, allowing people to connect with each other and share things they may need just once in a while, which also reduces our impact on Earth’s precious resources.

You can become further involved by donating items, volunteering your time and skills, and/or helping spread the word.

Check our inventory to see what we have on offer, and feel free to pop by the Share Shed (open Saturdays from 10am-1pm) and have a browse around!

Why use the Share Shed?

We strongly believe that:

  • By collaborating we are stronger
  • We have the duty to care for the Earth’s natural resources
  • Sharing our ‘stuff’ allows those who can’t afford to buy these things to access them
  • Connecting with others improves our wellbeing
  • Sharing is fun!
Sharing items promotes community resilience and empowers people.
By sharing we’re encouraging a much more mindful and respectful use of Earth’s precious natural resources.

Get Involved

Visit the Share Shed (by the Guildhall Yard, behind St Mary’s Church, on Totnes High Street) with some form of ID, a proof of address and a contribution between £1 and £10, and sign up to become a member. You’ll pay a nominal fee from £0.50 to £5 for each item borrowed, helping to ensure the project’s sustainability. You can check the inventory to see what is available. Each item is borrowed initially for a week (from Saturday to Saturday, with the possibility of extending this period according to your needs), and then it is returned so someone else can borrow it.

Could you spare a few hours a week volunteering at the Share Shed? Or would you like to support us at one of our local events? Or perhaps you could help with publicity? We welcome any help! Please contact us if you are interested in helping out.

Donating your stuff

Thinking of de-cluttering your garage or that spare room? If you have any useful items you no longer need and that are in good/working condition, please contact us to see if these are things we could make use of at the Share Shed. Also, please check out our Wish List to see the most wanted items.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the most commonly asked questions. Please get in touch if you have any question and/or for further information.

Who can use Share Shed?

Anyone who lives in Totnes and the surrounding parishes. Just bring a form of ID, a proof of address and a contribution between £1 and £10 to become a member. Once you’ve filled in your Membership Application Form, you’ll be ready to start borrowing!

Why do I need to sign a borrowers agreement and liability waiver?

We want to make sure that all Members use the items in a safe manner, and the borrower’s agreement reinforces that the Member is certifying that he or she is capable of using that item in a safe and proper manner and will use relevant safety equipment.

What are your opening hours?
The Share Shed is open every Saturday from 10am to 1pm. We hope to increase this in the future, if our trial period is successful.
How much does it cost to borrow an item?

The price to borrow an item varies (usually between £0.50 and £5) depending on the item. This price allows you to borrow the item for a week.
